Meet Gert-Jan
Curious by nature and driven by a passion for learning, Gert-Jan loves turning complex data into clear, actionable insights. Building data solutions that not only work, but make sense. He gets his energy from finding solutions to intricate challenges, presenting him a way to keep learning while doing. At Plainsight, he’s excited to keep exploring the world of data and help our clients turn their information into real impact. Outside of working hours, he enjoys venturing into the mountains, either by climbing peaks or observing them from above with a paraglider.
We asked Gert-Jan some thoughtful questions:
Gert-jan, how did you discover your passion for data?
Through a 3-month data science bootcamp. After that bootcamp I landed a role as a data consultant. I was responsible for end-to-end delivery of data projects for one of the clients of the company. This went from gathering data at different sources, modelling/transforming the raw data in Azure Synapse through either SQL scripts or PySpark notebooks, to reporting in Power BI. Through those years I learned that for me, the most rewarding part of the whole process was the modelling & transforming part. In that regard I’m very happy to now be able to follow up on this insight in a project combining dbt & Fabric at one of our clients.
Why did you specifically choose Plainsight?
From the get-go, I liked the energy from the people I spoke to. Still being a young company, the dynamic is quite unique in my eyes. Everyone is allowed to be him/herself, the structure is kept flat, there’s a lot of room to provide open feedback and many opportunities to advance knowledge in the parts of data solutions you’re interested in. A lot of effort is put into maintaining this dynamic as well through team gatherings of all sorts.
What was your first month at Plainsight like?
The feeling I had before my first day, continued through the first month as well. It was a warm welcome on the first day with a clear introduction. I was also lucky enough to be able to start on my current project quite instantly. In that first month, some teambuildings were already planned so I got to know all the colleagues after a short while.
What’s the most adventurous thing you’ve ever done?
Before joining Plainsight, I took a career break and went travelling all around New Zealand for three months in a campervan. It was a big leap to leave everything for a while and travel to the other side of the world. But it was certainly worth it in the end, with lots of memories created. Although it took some time to adjust to a mostly sedentary lifestyle again
