Meet Sofie
Sofie holds a strong academic background in Informatics and Artificial Intelligence, with degrees from KU Leuven. With over four years of experience as a Data Consultant, she has contributed on various data-driven projects across industries, specializing in building scalable ETL pipelines, data modeling, and optimizing workflows. Her expertise includes technologies like Python, Spark, DBT, AWS, and Airflow. Sofie enjoys designing and optimizing data pipelines, ensuring efficient data processing and seamless integration across systems.
We asked Sofie some thoughtful questions.
Sofie, how did you discover your passion for data?
I discovered my passion for data during my studies in Informatics and Artificial Intelligence at KU Leuven. I was always drawn to problem-solving and enjoyed working with structured logic, but it was during my first hands-on experiences with data modeling and big data processing that everything clicked. I found it fascinating how raw data could be transformed into meaningful insights through well-designed pipelines and workflows. As I started working on real-world projects, I saw the impact that efficient data engineering solutions could have on businesses, and that motivated me to keep learning and improving my skills.
Why did you specifically choose Plainsight?
I chose Plainsight because of its strong focus on innovative data solutions and its commitment to leveraging cutting-edge technology in data engineering and analytics. Having gained experience in larger, more established companies, I was drawn to the fast-paced startup culture, where there is still so much to accomplish and grow. The opportunity to roll up my sleeves and actively contribute to building and scaling the company excites me. Additionally, the team at Plainsight is dynamic, highly intelligent, and always supportive, creating a strong sense of camaraderie and collaboration.
What was your first month at Plainsight like?
My first month at Plainsight was both exciting and challenging. From day one, I jumped right into working with a client, which gave me the opportunity to dive into real, impactful projects immediately. I worked on a proof of concept for an image recognition app using Azure, FastAPI, and OpenAI API calls, which allowed me to combine machine learning with cloud infrastructure. While working on the app, I also had the opportunity to get more familiar with the client’s data setup, focusing mostly on Azure, Databricks, and PowerBI. Additionally, I contributed to developing a chatbot for another client, leveraging Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) on Azure. Throughout it all, I was given the freedom to explore, learn, and take ownership of my work, which made the experience incredibly rewarding.
If you could have dinner with any historical figure, who would it be and why?
If I could have dinner with any historical figure, it would be Ada Lovelace. Her story is incredibly inspiring—she was a pioneer in the field of computing, long before the industry even existed as we know it today. As a woman in tech, I look up to her not only for her intellectual brilliance but also for her ability to push boundaries in a male-dominated field. Ada was ahead of her time, conceptualizing the idea of software and programming when computers were nothing more than theoretical machines. Her resilience, creativity, and vision continue to motivate me, and I would love to hear more about her journey and the challenges she faced in her groundbreaking work.
